Windrush.

I was going to write about the Windrush scandal this week. I read this article as potential research and decided that instead of adding mine to the many voices, I would instead promote an expert. Far from being a thing of the past, Britain’s cruel deportation practices continue to this day. And, shockingly, it is made possible by UK aid money. This is a brilliant article that really makes the desperate injustice of Britain’s deportation policies real and tangible. As well as showing the plight of individuals, the article also touches on the relationship between Britain and its former colonies and the unjust power imbalance that exists. It is an edited extract from Deporting Black Britons: Portraits of Deportation to Jamaica by Luke de Noronha, which will be published by Manchester University Press on 1 September. De Noronha is an academic and writer working at the University of Manchester. He has written widely on the politics of immigration, racism and deportation and has produced a podcast called Deportation Discs.
